George Hetzel and the Scalp Level Tradition

Published in 1994 for the George Hetzel retrospective exhibition at the Museum, this 182 page catalog by Director Emeritus, Paul A. Chew, features 38 color plates and a forward by former Museum Director Judith H. O'Toole. The book explores Hetzel's life, his patrons, which included early Pittsburgh industrialists, and the environment in which he flourished, in addition to examining the climate for art in the last half of the 19th century in western Pennsylvania. The book also explores Hetzel's role as teacher, his taste as a collector, and includes a catalog of his known paintings.
